Liver Scan Cost Australia — What FibroScan and Elastography Costs in 2026
One of the most common questions from Australian patients considering a liver scan is what it will cost. The honest answer: it varies by clinic, scan type, and location — but the range is predictable and for most patients the total out-of-pocket cost is $150–$300.
This guide covers what liver scans cost at Australian clinics in 2026, whether Medicare covers any of it, what private health insurance may contribute, and how to find the most affordable option near you.

Does Medicare Cover Liver Scans in Australia?
This is the most important cost question — and the answer is currently no for most patients.
Liver elastography (FibroScan, guided transient elastography) does not have a Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) item number for MASLD assessment in most clinical circumstances. This means patients pay the full private cost without a Medicare rebate.
The Medicare Benefits Advisory Committee (MSAC) reviewed elastography item numbers for liver fibrosis assessment and deferred a positive recommendation, citing insufficient evidence at the time of review. With the Medical Journal of Australia's September 2025 consensus statement now published and the April 2026 TGA approval of Wegovy specifically for MASH, the case for an MBS item number is significantly stronger. Advocacy from the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and liver disease organisations is ongoing.
What this means practically: Until an MBS item number is introduced, most Australian patients pay privately for liver elastography. The good news is that costs are modest relative to the clinical information provided — particularly compared to liver biopsy, which remains the primary alternative.
Exception: Some clinics offer bulk billing or Medicare rebates for liver scans performed under specific indications. CareWell Diagnostix in Tarneit advertises bulk billing for liver elastography under certain conditions. Call ahead to ask whether your specific clinical indication qualifies.

Some private health insurers provide rebates for liver elastography under extras cover or specialist cover. Coverage varies significantly between funds and policies.
Before booking, check:
- Whether your extras cover includes "diagnostic imaging" or "specialist consultations"
- Whether a GP referral is required by your insurer for the rebate to apply
- The specific item description your insurer uses — "liver elastography," "transient elastography," or "FibroScan" may each be listed differently
Major Australian insurers that may provide partial cover include Medibank, Bupa, HCF, and nib — but coverage is policy-specific. Contact your fund directly before attending to confirm.
How to Reduce Your Out-of-Pocket Cost
1. Start with FIB-4 from your GP first. If your FIB-4 score is below 1.3 (low risk), you may not need a liver scan at all — saving you the cost entirely. FIB-4 uses results from your standard blood panel, which is often bulk-billed at a GP consultation.
2. Ask about bulk billing. A small number of Australian clinics bulk bill liver elastography for specific indications. Ask when booking.
3. Check your private health cover. A partial rebate from your insurer can meaningfully reduce the out-of-pocket amount.
4. Compare clinic prices. Prices vary across clinics in the same city. Calling two or three nearby clinics to compare prices before booking is reasonable and widely done.
5. Consider the cost relative to the alternative. A liver biopsy — the only other definitive fibrosis assessment — costs $1,500–$3,000+ and carries procedural risk. At $150–$300, liver elastography is substantially cheaper, faster, and safer.

The MBS Item Number Situation — What to Watch

The Australian liver disease community is actively advocating for an MBS item number for liver elastography. The arguments are now stronger than at any previous point:
- The MJA September 2025 consensus statement recommends elastography for all patients with indeterminate FIB-4 — creating a national clinical standard
- The April 2026 TGA provisional approval of Wegovy for MASH creates a monitoring imperative — treatment requires assessment
- Approximately 7.8 million Australians have MASLD, with 500,000 on GLP-1 medications and growing
An MBS item number, when introduced, would reduce patient cost from $150–$300 to the standard Medicare gap — dramatically improving access.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a FibroScan cost in Australia?
Approximately $150–$300 at most private Australian clinics. Some clinics charge as little as $196. MRI elastography costs $500–$900+ at specialist centres.
Is liver elastography covered by Medicare in Australia?
Not currently for most MASLD indications. There is no MBS item number for transient elastography in routine liver fibrosis assessment. Advocacy for a rebate is ongoing.
Can I get a bulk-billed liver scan?
A small number of Australian clinics offer bulk billing for liver elastography under certain conditions. Call ahead to ask whether your indication qualifies.
Why does a liver scan cost more than a blood test?
Liver elastography requires specialist equipment, operator training, and clinic overhead. The cost reflects the technology and clinical expertise involved. Relative to liver biopsy — the alternative — it is significantly cheaper, faster, and risk-free.
Will prices change when Wegovy is PBS-listed?
An MBS item number for elastography is being advocated for separately from the PBS Wegovy listing. If introduced, it would reduce patient cost to the standard Medicare gap. The two processes are independent.
