The Psychological Side of GLP-1 Therapy — Food Noise, Eating and Stopping Treatment
GLP-1 medications change more than appetite. Many Australians describe quieter "food noise," shifting identity as weight falls, or anxiety about what happens when the injection stops. Others with a history of binge eating or anorexia need careful, multidisciplinary care.
This guide covers the psychological experiences patients report on Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, when to seek psychology or psychiatry support, and how to plan for discontinuation without losing metabolic gains recklessly.

"Food noise" describes intrusive thoughts about eating — planning the next meal, grazing, or battling cravings. GLP-1 receptor agonists blunt ghrelin-related drive and slow gastric emptying, which many patients experience as sudden mental quiet around food.
For some, relief is life-changing. For others, it feels disorienting — food may have been a primary coping mechanism for stress, loneliness, or boredom. When the noise stops, underlying emotions can surface.
Psychologists and dietitians can help build new coping strategies before food noise returns if medication is reduced or stopped.
Disordered Eating and Prescribing Caution
GLP-1 medications are not approved to treat eating disorders and can complicate recovery if appetite suppression masks inadequate intake or triggers restrictive behaviour.
- Active anorexia nervosa or underweight without specialist plan — generally avoid GLP-1 until stabilised.
- Binge eating disorder — may benefit in selected cases under eating-disorder-informed care, but risk of shifting to restriction.
- Past bulimia — monitor electrolytes and hydration; vomiting plus GLP-1 GI effects compound dehydration risk.
If you have any eating disorder history, involve a GP, psychologist, and dietitian experienced in eating disorders before starting or continuing Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro.

Rapid weight change can alter how you see yourself and how others treat you. Some patients report grief, fear of regain, or discomfort with compliments. Relationship dynamics around food and social eating may shift.
Psychology support — including cognitive behavioural therapy and acceptance-based approaches — helps anchor self-worth to more than the number on the scale.
Planning for Discontinuation
Weight regain is common when GLP-1 therapy stops unless lifestyle and behavioural supports are in place. Abrupt cessation without a plan can restore food noise and metabolic risk quickly.
- Discuss tapering vs stopping with your prescriber — evidence for taper schedules is evolving.
- Maintain protein targets and resistance training (see muscle loss guide).
- Book psychology and dietitian follow-up before the last dose.
- Schedule blood monitoring at 3 and 12 months after stopping — metabolic risk persists.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to feel anxious when food noise goes away?
Yes — many patients report adjustment periods. If anxiety, low mood, or obsessive thoughts about food or weight escalate, seek psychology support early.
Can GLP-1 medications cause depression?
Trials did not show major depression signals, but individual mood changes are reported. Report new or worsening depression to your doctor promptly.
I have binge eating disorder — can I take Wegovy?
Some specialists prescribe GLP-1s cautiously with multidisciplinary care. It is not a DIY decision — requires eating-disorder-informed monitoring.
Will food noise come back if I stop Mounjaro?
Often appetite and intrusive thoughts return as drug levels fall. Behavioural skills and nutrition structure help; some patients restart medication after discussion with their clinician.
Does Medicare cover psychology for GLP-1 patients?
A GP mental health treatment plan provides Medicare rebates for registered psychologists, subject to session limits. Ask your GP about eligibility.
