Private Weight Loss Clinics in Australia Offering GLP-1 — What to Look For

The number of private weight loss clinics prescribing GLP-1 medications in Australia has grown significantly alongside the GLP-1 prescribing boom. Not all clinics offer the same level of care. This guide explains what a quality GLP-1 clinic should provide, what to ask before committing, and how to find a clinic near you.

A private weight loss clinic offering GLP-1 medications is a physician-led service that combines GLP-1 prescribing with varying levels of clinical support. They occupy the space between telehealth platforms (convenient, prescription-focused, minimal monitoring) and specialist centres (highly comprehensive, longer waits, higher cost).

Quality private GLP-1 clinics integrate pharmacological prescribing with nutritional guidance, monitoring, and in some cases psychological support. This is the model the clinical evidence supports — GLP-1 medication combined with dietary and behavioural guidance produces better outcomes than medication alone.

Most private weight management clinics in Australia charge a monthly fee that includes the consultation and prescription, typically $250–$500/month all-in at the 1mg+ dose range. This is broadly comparable to telehealth platforms but typically includes more comprehensive monitoring.

What a Quality GLP-1 Clinic Should Offer

1. AHPRA-registered medical prescribers

All prescribers should be registered with AHPRA. You can verify any doctor's registration at ahpra.gov.au. The prescribing doctor should be a GP, endocrinologist, or physician with obesity medicine experience — not a non-medical health coach or wellness practitioner.

2. Baseline blood tests

A quality clinic orders a baseline metabolic panel before prescribing: liver function (ALT, AST, GGT), kidney function (creatinine, eGFR), thyroid (TSH), lipid panel, HbA1c. This is the standard recommended by Australian clinical guidelines. If a clinic wants to prescribe without any baseline bloods, that is a concern.

3. FIB-4 calculation and liver monitoring

The MJA September 2025 consensus statement requires FIB-4 assessment for all GLP-1 patients with metabolic risk factors. A clinic that does not calculate FIB-4 from your baseline blood panel is not meeting Australian guideline standards.

4. Dietitian integration

Dietitians Australia is calling for mandatory APD referral on every GLP-1 prescription. A quality clinic offers dietitian consultations — either in-house or via Chronic Disease Management Plan referral — as a standard component of the programme, not an expensive add-on.

5. Regular monitoring reviews

At minimum: a 3-month review with blood panel during dose escalation. Annual review with full metabolic panel thereafter. A clinic that issues a prescription and has no structured review schedule is providing prescribing, not care.

6. Specialist referral pathway

A quality clinic has a clear pathway to refer patients to hepatologists, endocrinologists, cardiologists, or bariatric surgeons when indicated. If a clinic's only offering is prescribing with no referral network, complex patients have nowhere to go when issues emerge.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Clinic

Before committing to a private GLP-1 clinic, ask:

Before committing to a private GLP-1 clinic, ask:

  1. Are all prescribers AHPRA-registered? (Verify at ahpra.gov.au)
  2. What baseline blood tests do you order before prescribing?
  3. Do you calculate FIB-4 and refer for liver elastography if indeterminate?
  4. Is dietitian support included or available?
  5. What is the monitoring schedule after I start?
  6. What happens if my blood tests show something concerning?
  7. Can you refer me to a specialist if needed?
  8. What is the total monthly cost including consultations?
  9. Is the medication TGA-registered (not compounded)?

A clinic that cannot answer most of these questions clearly, or whose answers reveal a prescription-only model with no monitoring, may not provide the comprehensive care that Australian guidelines recommend.

Red Flags to Watch For

Prescribing without baseline bloods: Any clinic willing to prescribe GLP-1 medications without ordering baseline liver function, kidney function, and thyroid tests is not meeting the standard of care.

No structured monitoring: Dose escalation and annual monitoring are not optional — they are clinically required. A monthly prescribing service with no structured review is a convenience service, not a medical weight management programme.

Compounded medications: From October 2024, Australian pharmacies can no longer legally compound replicas of GLP-1 drugs. Clinics offering compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide at significantly lower prices are not offering TGA-approved medication.

Non-medical prescribers: Weight loss coaching, health coaching, and wellness programmes do not include prescribing authority. Only AHPRA-registered doctors can issue GLP-1 prescriptions. If the person assessing you is not a registered doctor, they cannot legally prescribe.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private GLP-1 clinic cost in Australia?

Most private weight management clinics charge $250–$500/month including consultation and prescription at the 1mg+ dose range. The medication cost itself ranges from approximately $280–$690/month for Mounjaro and $350–$500/month for Wegovy depending on dose. Total costs are typically $600–$1,000/month when combining clinic fees and medication.

Are weight loss clinics covered by Medicare in Australia?

GP consultations at weight loss clinics are typically covered by Medicare if the GP bulk bills. Specialist obesity medicine consultations attract a Medicare rebate. The medication itself — Wegovy, Mounjaro — does not attract a PBS subsidy for weight management. Blood tests ordered during consultations are generally bulk-billed.

Can a weight loss clinic prescribe Mounjaro?

Yes — any AHPRA-registered doctor at a weight loss clinic can prescribe Mounjaro if you meet the eligibility criteria. Confirm that your prescriber is AHPRA-registered and that you receive TGA-approved Mounjaro from a registered pharmacy, not compounded tirzepatide.

Is a weight loss clinic better than telehealth?

A quality in-person weight loss clinic typically provides more comprehensive monitoring than a telehealth platform — baseline bloods, FIB-4 assessment, structured review schedule, dietitian integration, and specialist referral pathway. For patients with complex metabolic health needs, an in-person clinic is preferable. For straightforward prescribing and convenience, telehealth is appropriate.
