How to Get a Wegovy Prescription in Australia — Eligibility, Cost and Access (2026)

Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) is now available in Australia via private prescription. It is TGA-registered for chronic weight management in adults and received provisional approval for non-cirrhotic MASH (fatty liver disease with fibrosis) in April 2026 — making it the only GLP-1 medication in Australia with a specific liver disease indication. A PBS subsidy for weight management is pending but not yet in effect as of mid-2026.

This guide explains who can get a Wegovy prescription in Australia, what the eligibility criteria are, what it costs, and how to access it through your GP or telehealth.

What Is Wegovy and How Is It Different from Ozempic?

Both Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide — the same active ingredient. The difference is dose and approved indication.

Both Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide — the same active ingredient. The difference is dose and approved indication.

Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes at doses up to 1mg weekly. It is PBS-subsidised for T2D patients who meet the clinical criteria.

Wegovy is approved specifically for chronic weight management at 2.4mg weekly — more than double the standard Ozempic dose. Because of this higher dose, Wegovy produces greater weight loss on average. The STEP programme clinical trials demonstrated approximately 14–17% body weight reduction over 68–72 weeks.

Wegovy is also TGA-approved for:

  • Cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity (basis of the December 2025 PBAC recommendation)
  • Non-cirrhotic MASH with F2–F3 fibrosis (provisional approval April 2026, based on the ESSENCE trial)

TGA Registration and PBS Status (Mid-2026)

Wegovy is registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) for:

  • Chronic weight management — adults with BMI ≥30, or BMI ≥27 with a weight-related condition
  • Cardiovascular risk reduction — adults with established CVD and obesity
  • MASH treatment — non-cirrhotic MASH with F2–F3 fibrosis (provisional, April 2026)

PBS status: The PBAC recommended PBS listing in November/December 2025, but as of mid-2026 the listing has not been finalised. Price negotiations between the Australian government and Novo Nordisk are ongoing. PBS listing is expected no earlier than late 2026 to early 2027, with access initially restricted to patients with established cardiovascular disease and BMI ≥35.

Until PBS listing is confirmed, all patients pay the full private prescription cost.

Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide): The oral form of Wegovy launched in the US in January 2026. As of mid-2026, Novo Nordisk has not lodged a TGA application for the oral form in Australia. It is not legally available here. Only the injectable form is TGA-registered.

Any AHPRA-registered doctor can prescribe Wegovy. No specialist referral is required — your GP can assess and prescribe directly. Telehealth doctors registered with AHPRA can also prescribe.

Supply has stabilised significantly in 2025–2026 compared to the shortages of 2023–2024. Wegovy is available at major Australian pharmacies and through compounding-free dispensing — always ensure you receive the TGA-registered product, not a compounded alternative.

Eligibility Criteria

TGA approval criteria for Wegovy for weight management:

  • BMI ≥30 (obesity), or
  • BMI ≥27 with at least one weight-related condition — type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, or MASLD (fatty liver disease)
  • As an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity
  • No personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2 syndrome
  • No active pancreatitis

For the cardiovascular indication specifically, eligibility requires established cardiovascular disease — prior heart attack, stroke, or symptomatic peripheral arterial disease — plus obesity. When PBS listing eventually confirms, this is the group that will access the subsidised price.

For the MASH indication — non-cirrhotic MASH with F2–F3 fibrosis, confirmed by liver biopsy or non-invasive testing. This requires specialist involvement (hepatologist or gastroenterologist) for diagnosis and monitoring.

  • Chemist Warehouse pharmacy loyalty programmes
  • Novo Nordisk WegovyCare programme — ask your prescriber for current availability

The Monitoring You Need on Wegovy

Australian clinical guidelines recommend comprehensive monitoring beyond what telehealth platforms typically provide.

Before starting:

  • Liver function tests (ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, bilirubin)
  • FIB-4 calculation — all GLP-1 patients should be assessed for fatty liver disease per the MJA September 2025 consensus statement
  • Kidney function (creatinine, eGFR)
  • Thyroid function (TSH)
  • Lipid panel, blood pressure, HbA1c (if diabetic)

At 3 months:

  • Repeat liver function tests
  • Repeat kidney function
  • Weight, blood pressure, side effect review

Annual:

  • Full metabolic panel
  • FIB-4 recalculation
  • Liver elastography if FIB-4 was indeterminate at baseline

For the MASH indication specifically:

  • Annual liver elastography to assess treatment response
  • Hepatologist or gastroenterologist involvement for ongoing monitoring
  • Liver biopsy is typically required to confirm MASH at F2–F3 before prescribing under this indication

Compounding pharmacies in Australia have offered compounded semaglutide at lower prices. This is not the same as TGA-approved Wegovy. The TGA has taken enforcement action against pharmacies advertising compounded weight loss medicines inappropriately and has warned about counterfeit Ozempic-labelled pens entering Australia.

Always ensure your medication is TGA-approved and dispensed by a registered Australian pharmacy. If the source seems unusual — overseas websites, social media sellers, unusually low prices — it is not a legitimate product.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wegovy available in Australia in 2026?

Yes. Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg weekly injection) is TGA-registered in Australia and available via private prescription at approximately $350–$500 per month. Supply has stabilised following the 2023–2024 shortages.

Is Wegovy on the PBS in Australia?

Not yet. The PBAC recommended PBS listing in late 2025, but price negotiations are ongoing as of mid-2026. PBS listing is expected no earlier than late 2026, initially restricted to patients with established cardiovascular disease and BMI ≥35. For all other patients, private prescription at full cost applies.

Do I need a specialist to get Wegovy in Australia?

No. Any AHPRA-registered GP can prescribe Wegovy for weight management. No specialist referral is required. For the MASH liver disease indication, specialist involvement is appropriate. For the PBS cardiovascular indication when it eventually lists, a GP can prescribe with the relevant clinical criteria documented.

What is the difference between Wegovy and Ozempic?

Both contain semaglutide. Wegovy is the 2.4mg dose approved specifically for weight management. Ozempic is the up-to-1mg dose approved for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy produces greater weight loss because of the higher dose. Only Ozempic has a current PBS subsidy — and only for T2D patients.

Can I get Wegovy through telehealth in Australia?

Yes. Multiple AHPRA-registered telehealth platforms assess and prescribe Wegovy. Programmes typically cost $400–$500/month including consultation. Supply is generally available through these platforms.

Is the Wegovy pill available in Australia?

No. The oral form of Wegovy (semaglutide pill) launched in the US in January 2026 but as of mid-2026 has not been submitted for TGA registration in Australia. Only the injectable weekly pen is legally available here.
